Abstract:	It is proposed to compare the history of one of the eastern Ukrainian villages, based on the historical memory of its inhabitants, and on the other hand, on documentary sources.The research confirms that historical retellings, on the one hand, distort historical realities, and on the other hand, contain facts that have not survived in written documents.
